Rustler Lodge sadly announces the passing of our owner Jeffrey L. Anderson

Jeffrey L. Anderson, a father, adventurer, and long-time owner of Alta's Rustler Lodge in Alta, Utah, passed away quietly on Feb. 19, 2026, in Salt Lake City at the age of 73.

Jeff was born on March 28, 1952, in Salt Lake City, to Florence Fotes and Clyde Anderson. In 1965, his mother married Lee James Bronson, who lovingly adopted Jeff and raised him as his own son.

After graduating from Olympus High School, where he was involved in student government, newspaper and study club, Jeff attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1974. At Dartmouth, he was a member of the crew team serving as coxswain his freshman year. He was also a DJ for the college radio station WDCR.

More than any passion or adventure, skiing was a constant and shaped Jeff's life personally and professionally. From ski team in high school to college racing and later coaching, it was skiing that brought him back west to what would become his life's work.

Returning to Alta after graduation, Jeff worked under Mayor Bill Levitt as the town administrator. His signature accomplishment of securing water for the town of Alta was one of the most significant agreements in the community's history.

In 1976, he purchased shares in the Rustler Lodge joining his father Lee Bronson. Upon Lee's death in 2013, Jeff became the sole owner. Under his leadership and vision, the ski lodge expanded and continued to be a truly special place for generations of employees and guests.

Jeff's deep ties to Alta began in childhood with stories of being transported by helicopter from Alta to Salt Lake City to attend school when the Little Cottonwood Canyon Road was closed. He also had countless tales of his beloved dogs, Ceret and Laddie.

Growing up as an only child, Jeff's cousins share that he was inventive, curious and energetic. He was the "self-proclaimed leader of the Utah cousins—always engaging, ready to take hold of the world … knowing you had to hold tight if you wanted to stay on top of the wave of life." With his open laugh, lively disposition and affectionate nicknaming, he was the "leader of the band" on childhood adventures, demonstrating early the confidence and bold spirit that would define his life, leadership and guarantee his success.

In later years, Jeff enjoyed many hobbies in addition to skiing, including golfing, tennis, scuba diving, biking, flying, fishing, and photography. Recalling his artful athleticism, family members also remember his artistic side spinning the pottery wheel or with a brush and canvas.

Living boldly and speaking his mind, Jeff made a lasting impression on all who knew him. He pushed for excellence in himself and with others. Jeff's larger-than-life personality and adventurous spirit was felt by everyone he encountered. His presence will be missed.

He is survived by his three daughters: Kamisha, Cierra and Rae and one granddaughter, Brecklyn.

Jeff leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Alta that will continue through the Rustler Lodge and the people who knew, worked and cared for him. Stemming from his deep connection and enduring love for Alta, memorials can be made to Alta Community Enrichment (ACE) at altacommunity.org/donate.

A private celebration of Jeff's life and his mother Florence Bronson, who passed away Feb. 28, 2025, will be held this summer for family and close friends.
